KAYSERI (2010 FIBA World Championship) – Australia came back early in the game and defeated Angola
76-55 to finish third in Group A of the FIBA World Championship.
Now the Australian team, by finishing third in Group A, will face Slovenia on Sunday in the Eighth Final Round while Angola plays the United States on Monday.
In the first quarter Angola dominated thanks to their efficient offensive attack led by Joaquim Gomes who had 6 points. The first ten minutes finished 18-15 in favor of Angola.
Then Australia made an 11-0 run, sparked especially by their defensive effort, led by Matt Nielsen and Joe Ingles to be up 26-22 and finished the first half up 39-29. Patrick Mills and Matt Nielsen finished with 7 points each and they combined for 10 in this quarter.
In the second half Australia pulled away with a balanced offensive attack and their reserves increased their lead to get another win.
Patrick Mills led Australia with 11 points and also the rest of his teammates scored at least 2 points. David Anderson missed the game due to a stomach virus.
Angola had no players in double figures and Olimpio Cipriano missed the game due to an injury to his left leg.

Quotes:
Brett Brown (Head Coach, Australia): We came very nervous because we watched Angola’s fantastic game against Germany last night. Angola was very good at start but we managed to take the control of the game at the end of the second quarter when we cranked up our defense. We look forward to going to Istanbul.
Patrick Mills (Guard, Australia): We dominated the game in general. We were better than Angola. I guess we will match with Slovenia in Istanbul. We played against them 2 times in preparation period of the championship. We will do our best in the field.
Matt Nielsen (Forward, Australia): We knew that it’d be a tough game because Angola has the potential of surprising any team. We watched their games and followed their performance very closely. At the beginning of the third quarter, we took control of the game and we won. We will be resting tomorrow and will be seeing you in Istanbul after that.
Luis Magalhaes (Head Coach, Angola): Australia is a strong team. They have a good rhythm. In first 15 minutes we keep the distance closer but after that point we couldn’t keep up with their rhythm and we lost.
