LAS PALMAS (2010 FIBA World Championship) - Carlos Suarez has insisted the fierce competition for places in the Spain squad for the FIBA World Championship does nothing to disrupt the great atmosphere amongst the players.
Fifteen players are in camp as Spain warm-up in Las Palmas this week, and three of them must be cut by coach Sergio Scariolo before the team goes forward to Turkey.
Suarez is one of those whose place is not secure, but he is not letting that concern him. "We have to fight for our places," he said. "There is a healthy competition because we all get along great. My experience this year is even better than last year, and we are getting along phenomenally well."
Suarez believes that by having fun in practice, Spain can play their best basketball on the court. "We should aspire to be our best and have fun on the court because it shows in the results," he said.
One vacancy has arisen in the Spain squad because of the absence of Pau Gasol.
The loss of the Los Angeles Lakers center is a major blow to Spain, but one Ricky Rubio does not think should stop them winning the world title.
"We should not talk about Pau because we have others here and we have enough talent to win the World Championship," Rubio said, clearly not shying away from the tournament favourites tag.
"There is no pressure," he added. "It is an honour to be considered favourites. But it is no use on the court, and we will have to earn the crown."
