The draw ceremony for the 2010 FIBA World Championship was held in Istanbul on 15th December 2009 and can be rewatched here

As hosts of the competition, Turkey qualified automatically for the Championship.

The second team to qualify was the USA, who booked their ticket as gold medal winners at the Olympic basketball competition in Beijing.

Eighteen of the 22 remaining teams qualified thanks to the FIBA Continental (Zone) Championships.

  • In the FIBA Africa Championship, sixteen teams fought it out for three places at the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

  • In the FIBA Americas Championship, ten teams from North and South America came together to decide which four teams would go to Turkey.

  • In the FIBA EuroBasket, sixteen teams collided to fight for the six tickets to join Turkey as Europe's contenders for Basketball's top prize.

  • In the FIBA Oceania Championship, New Zealand and Australia played each other, with both teams earning their right to play in the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

Germany, Lebanon, Lithuania and Russia, who were awarded the 4 wild cards by FIBA's Central Board on 12th December 2009, completed the line-up for the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey.

Group A (Kayseri): Serbia, Argentina, Australia, Jordan, Germany, Angola
Group B (Istanbul): Croatia, Brazil, Tunisia, Slovenia, Iran, USA
Group C (Ankara): China, Turkey, Russia, Puerto Rico, Ivory Coast, Greece
Group D (Izmir): Lithuania, Lebanon, France, Spain, Canada, New Zealand

Draw and Competition Format

The draw divided the 24 teams into 4 groups of 6 teams, with each team playing the other five teams in their respective groups. Following the group stage, the top placed four teams from each group (16 teams) progress to the Eighth Finals, at which point the competition continues through to the Finals in a standard knock-out format.

The Championship will be played in Turkey in the cities of Ankara, Kayseri, Istanbul and Izmir between 28th August and 12th September 2010.
